The Twins of Pondicherry Shri.T.Srinivasa Rao and Shri.R.Gnanasekaran who hails from Pondicherry, Southern India, have been penniless child to their father since both their parents are freedom fighters who fought for freedom against the British Rulers and French Establishments.

As such both their Parents have been refused to have a liberal breath and be detained for several years. Their mother only took care of them by eking out livelihood through serving in the Textiles Mills in Pondicherry.

As such during their School education itself they got inspired to serve the nation and at last after completing their College Education they have first started their World Tour on bicycle at New Delhi by propaganda the cause and effects of Nuclear stocks by the developed nations and their successful journey was flagged off by the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late Dr.M.G.Ramachandran.

We are, adventurers and environmentalists, have gone around the globe Six times for the last two decades. 

We have started our first world tour by Bicycle from 1986 to 1989 for world Peace and Nuclear Disarmament, Second by Maruti Gypsy from 1990 to 1993 for Environmental Awareness Campaign, Third by Maruti Zen Car from 1996 to 1998 for Save Antarctica Campaign, fourth by Maruti Gypsy from 2000 to 2002 for Save The Planet campaign, Fifth one by Maruti Gypsy from 2003 to 2004 for Mission Save Earth Campaign and Sixth time by Hyundai Accent for Save the Rainforest campaign from 2005 to 2007. 

We have covered so far 120 countries and more than 600,000 km by land through all the Continents for the last 23 years. 

We are proudly say that we have successfully completed all the tours at the United Nations and had meeting with all the three U.N Secretary Generals since 1989 and have given our report to them. All the three successive U.N Secretary Generals, Mr. Perez de Cueller, Dr. Boutros Boutros Ghali and Mr. Kofi Annan have appreciated our efforts towards World Peace and Environmental Protection. 

We also brought out a book, namely ‘Mission Save Earth’ on our above said world tours. After going through all the Continents for the last two decades for different missions, we understand now, saving our Earth from global warming is urgently needed of this hour. 

So, we are undertaking a campaign worldwide once again for a seventh time, by Hyundai Tucson vehicle with carrying a message “Stop Global Warming and Save the Earth”. This tour will cover 50 Countries, 100,000 kms through all the Continents and conclude at the United Nations in New York in 2010.

The Hon. IAN COHEN [5.02 p.m.]: Today I was host to two young men, T. Srinivasa Rao and R Gnanasekaran, from India who have been travelling the world for 15 years. The message of those Indian environmentalists is "Mission Save Earth". I had lunch with them today and they were quite inspiring. They discussed how they were dealing with the situation in India, which many honourable members might imagine would be an absolutely impossible task. Nevertheless, it is interesting that whilst there are problems in India there are many people who can do something about them. These two adventurous environmentalists have travelled around the world three times. First, between 1986 and 1989, they travelled by bicycle, covering 38 countries and 65,000 kilometres. Second, between 1990 and 1993 they travelled in a small four-wheel drive, covering 70 countries in all six continents and 160,000 kilometres. Third, between 1996 and 1998 they travelled by car, covering 55,000 kilometres. Those distances include kilometres covered over land alone, not by air.

They successfully completed all three tours for the welfare of mankind in general: to propagate the message of nuclear disarmament and world peace, to campaign for environmental protection and to save Antarctica from global warming respectively. During the three tours they met members of the public, students, presidents, prime ministers, governors and mayors of the various countries they visited. At the conclusion of each of their tours they submitted charters of memorandum to the then United Nations Secretaries General, Mr Javier Perez De Cueller, Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali and Mr Kofi Annan. In continuation of those missions, they are once again undertaking a world tour, a save the planet campaign, which will cover five continents in two years. At present they are travelling throughout Australia. They have a book entitled Mission Save Earth, which contains pictures of them with everyone from Kofi Annan to former Australian Prime Ministers and overseas dignitaries.

They have had a significant effect in India. I was heartened to learn that any individual can petition the Indian Government immediately in relation to pollution. The matter then has to go to the High Court in any State in which it can be undertaken. Thousands of petitions are occurring at any time in India and they must be disposed of within three months. That means that courts give notice that any polluting industry has to shut down or fix up their pollution processes. They must comply with that environmental law within six months. After the 1992 Rio convention, in Delhi 10-year-old vehicles are banned, buses run on compressed natural gas and auto rickshaws have a special green sticker and run on CNG. If a person has a plastic bag in any of the major cities a rupee penalty equivalent to a $200 fine is imposed. At Hillstation plastics are banned and only cloth and jute bags are allowed.

Tamil Nadu, Madras, Bombay and Calcutta have all banned plastic chi cups. Some 60 million people live in Tamil Nadu so it is quite a significant change in their habit in recent years, with the many millions of chi cups being used on a daily basis. They insist on European standard two catalytic converters on all motor vehicles. India is the only place in the developing world that is using unleaded petrol. Jute bags made in India can last up to three years and are replacing plastic bags. That puts Australia to shame, especially with respect to the judicial developments that I have been told about by these two men. They are making a positive contribution to lowering pollution on a global scale. If India can do it, a western country such as Australia can make far greater efforts. We should look at container deposit legislation and use fewer throw-away plastics. Those measures would help to resolve some of the basic problems faced by our environment today.

Youngsters on world tour for global peace

NEW DELHI, Apr 19: Two environmentalists from Pondicherry have embarked on a world tour to promote awareness about environmental protection and spread the message of world peace and nuclear disarmament.

T Srinivasa Rao and R Gnanasekaran have, for the past 16 years been embarking on such tours as part of their campaign: "Mission save earth", the objective of which is to spread world peace and environment protection.

They commenced on their present world tour on a Maruti gypsy from here on Wednesday.

The journey by the two environmental crusaders, which was flagged off by Mr Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director, Maruti Udyog Limited, will conclude at the UN headquarters in New York in December 2003.

It was 16 years ago, in 1986, that the youngsters from Pondicherry decided to combine their love for adventure with their concern for the earth and its environment. They began by travelling the world on a bicycle in 1986. Three years later, they had covered 65,000 km across 38 countries.

The second such endeavour was during 1990-93 when they covered 1.6 lakh kms across 70 countries in a Maruti gypsy.

This was followed by another tour, covering 55,000 kms on a car during 1996-98.

During their most recent tour, the fourth one, which concluded recently, the duo travelled 50,000 kms on a gypsy.

In all, they have travelled 3.5 lakh kms across 100 countries.

During their world tours, Rao and Gnanasekaran have interacted with a whole range of people, from world leaders and policy makers to students and youth organisations.

Among the prominent personalities that they had an opportunity to meet have been former UN Secretaries General Javier Perez De Cueller and Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali and incumbent Kofi Annan.

They also interacted with prominent personalities like Mahatir Bin Mohammad in Malaysia, Mr Malcom Fraser, Mr Bob Hawke and Mr Paul Keating in Australia, Mr Ingwar Carlson in Sweden and Mr Brian Mulroney in Canada. Similarly, they have met leaders of several African countries during their tours. During their tours, the two youngsters have also addressed thousands of students world-wide and motivated them to set up forums for environment protection.

"Environmental destruction in the past was small in scale with limited area of impact. With globalisation and spread of the consumer culture, the threat to the environment has increased manifold, thus increasing the role and importance of people-based initiatives like ours,"the duo say.

"Daunting as the task is, we believe that individual actions and campaigns can make a difference and save the earth," they said.

According to them, the motivation for all these trips has come from a desire to make a difference in human lives.

"Too many people believe that they are not capable of achieving much. We wanted to show it can be done," they say.

From encountering venomous snakes in zaire to being stranded for four days in the Sahara, Rao and Gnanasekaran have had a rich fund of experience. They drove through minus 40 degree celsius in Russia and were forced to spend three days in a Chinese prison during their endeavour.

The people in Russia and Mongolia were some of the warmest. They were extremely hospitable after they learnt the duo were Indians.

"The South American part of our journey was the stretch we enjoyed the most,"says Gnanasekaran.

"The people were friendly. There was also the amazonian rain forest, so important for us in terms of the message we were trying to propagate. It’s being denuded at such a rapid rate, we are losing hundreds of species of plant and animal life every month."

The duo travelled through the driest part on earth, the Arica Desert (Attagama Desert) in Chile, crossing the line of tropic of Capricorn, and 5000-metre high track through the Andes Mountains.

Indian Environmentalists T. Srinivasa Rao and R. Gnanasekaran are in Australia on a world tour to raise environmental awareness and in particular, to lobby for the signing of the Kyoto protocol.

The duo have embarked on their international oddessey in a trusty Maruti-Suzuki Gypsy King (known in Australia as a Suzuki Sierra) with a frugal 1.3 litre engine.

Since leaving Delhi in March, Rao and Gnanasekaran have clocked up 25,000 kilometres and expect to cover at least 100,000 kilometres before their journey ends at the United Nations in April of 2003.

In Melbourne to discuss environmental issues, the pair will address school children and share an audience with the Victorian Premier Mr Steve Bracks and Melbourne Lord Mayor John So, before visiting Prime Minister Howard in Canberra.

Both engineers, Rao and Gnanasekaran have campaigned for a sustainable world environment since 1986, when they first cycled 65,000 kilometres around the globe promoting nuclear disarmament.

Since then, the pair have completed a further two world tours, a 200,000 kilometre expedition in an early model Gypsy, and the third in a Maruti-Suzuki Zen.

Ram Naik complements Flag Bearers of Environmental Issues

Shri Ram Naik, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, complemented Shri T. Srinivasa Rao and Shri R. Gnanasekaran for having undertaken four World Tours and embarking on the fifth one to arouse the people’s consciousness towards protecting and promoting the ecology world over. The two Environmentalists hailing from Pondicherry, met Shri Ram Naik to share their past experience of the world tours and to present a Book entitled "MISSION SAVE EARTH" authored by them.

Shri Naik emphasised that their endeavour to spread awareness about the need for preservation and protection of environment is very relevant today, especially when the nations are engaged in fierce competition to march ahead of one another, pursuing industrial development in particular. Often this results in neglect of issues concerning sustainable development of which healthy environment is a prerequisite. Announcing an assistance of Rs. 15 lakhs equally shared by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation and Gas Authority of India Limited, the Minister said the PSUs under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas are proud to associate with such a noble cause. "In fact the oil industry has contributed in the form of significant improvement in the quality of fuel supplied in the country so that auto emission is brought down to world standards. For example supply of low sulphur diesel (0.05% sulphur) and unleaded & low benzene (1%) petrol in four Metros is at par with most of the countries in the world including developed countries. Moreover unleaded petrol is being sold through out the country",  Shri Naik said.

Mr T.Srinivasa Rao and Mr R.Gnanasekaran informed the Minister that the oil industry has been extending its full cooperation and support to them since 1990. They complemented Petroleum Minister for his concerns to improve and preserve environment. The young environmentalists further informed Shri Naik that their current tour which is 5^th in the series of world tours focusses on 'Mission Save Earth' Campaign to bring the world together to save the world from the Global Warming. The present tour will cover 5 Continents and is expected to conclude by the year 2003.

They told the Minister that they began in 1986 by travelling nearly 65,000 kilometres across 38 countries on a bicycle carrying the message "Nuclear Disarmament and World Peace". The second such endeavour was "Save Environment Today - or Tomorrow will be too late" during 1990-93 when they covered 1.6 lakh kilometres across 70 countries in a Maruti Gypsy. This was followed by a tour covering 55,000 kilometres during 1996-98, with the message "Save Antarctica" completed successfully in a Maruti Zen. All these three world tours ended at UN Headquarters in New York with a meeting with the respective Secretaries General. The fourth tour on a Maruti Gypsy concluded recently in which they had travelled 50,000 kilometres .

New Delhi, April 17: Two environment enthusiasts from Pondicherry today embarked on a world tour to promote awareness about environmental protection and to spread the message of world peace and nuclear disarmament.

The two enthusiasts, Mr T. Srinivasa Rao and Mr R. Gnanasekaran, will undertake the world tour on a Maruti Gypsy King. The tour will conclude at the UN Headquarters in New York in December 2002.

The Minister of State for Finance, Mr Gingee N. Ramachandran, flagged them off in their Maruti Gypsy at a function here. Mr Jagdish Khattar, managing director,

Maruti Udyog Limited, was also present on the occasion.

Mr Rao and Mr Gnanasekaran have been using this route to spread the message of world peace and environment protection for the past 16 years. They have worked for these objectives as part of their campaign, ‘Mission Save Earth’.
