CHENNAI: Fighting global warming requires a joint global effort, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has said.
Flagging off a world tour undertaken by two environmentalists at a function got up by the Communist Party of India on the Marina on Sunday, the Chief Minister said though the inauguration was a simple affair, their mission to create awareness about global warming and the need to save rainforests would have a big impact.
T. Srinivasa Rao and R. Gnanasekaran are on their seventh world tour to campaign for peace and the environment. Hyundai has provided its Tucson SUV for the tour.
Wishing them all success, Mr. Karunanidhi lauded the efforts of the two “ambassadors of Tamil Nadu” to spread the message far and wide and unite the nations to work together to safeguard people from the consequences.
Ministers Arcot N. Veeraswamy and K. Ponmudy, CPI State general secretary D. Pandian and Hyundai Motor India’s Managing Director H.S. Lheem were present.
The two environmentalists have travelled across the continents for the past 18 years on different missions. This time, they expect to cover over 30 countries, passing through forests of Africa and the Amazon river basin before concluding their tour in April 2009.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), the country's second largest car manufacturer and the largest passenger car exporter, has taken on a new initiative to focus on the campaign for Global Warming by providing its SUV - Hyundai Tucson to noted environmentalists T. Srinivasa Rao and R. Gnanasekaran. Taking off in a Hyundai Tucson SUV, they have started on a global crusade to circle the world building awareness on environmental issues, primarily the effects of global warming on human health and habitats.
Hon'ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr K M Karunanidhi handed over the ceremonial keys and also flagged off the unique campaign to focus attention on global warming.
Carrying the message 'Stop Global Warming and Save the Rainforest', the crusaders will circle the globe, covering 30 countries and over 100,000 km, including the Amazon and African forests, in the Hyundai Tucson SUV. Their expedition will culminate at the United Nations in April 2009.
The Chief Minister spoke about the potential threats of global warming and the imperative to address the issue, praising the campaigners for their ardour and congratulating Hyundai for supporting them. Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education Mr K Ponmudy and Minister for Electricity Mr N Veeraswamy also echoed the sentiments, calling for greater public awareness of environmental issues.
Speaking on the occasion, Hyundai Motor India Managing Director Mr H S Lheem said: "Hyundai is privileged to be part of an effort to create awareness of the imminent hazards that global warming presents to human society. Young people like Srinivasa Rao and Gnanasekaran are to be congratulated for expending so much energy in this effort and we are happy to be able to support them. Hyundai has prioritised environment protection in its business as well, not only by implementing the strictest emission control measures in all its models, but also undertaking to install systems for more environment-friendly fuels such as CNG and LPG"
T. Srinivasa Rao and R. Gnanasekaran have been campaigning on environment and peace issues since 1986. This is their seventh global expedition. Their campaigns have been highly appreciated by successive UN Secretaries General -- Mr Perez de Cuellar, Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali and Mr Kofi Annan. The young crusaders have published a book, 'Mission Save Earth' on their efforts.

This time, Indian environmentalists T. Srinivasa Rao, 47, and R. Gnanasekaran, 46, from New Delhi, are travelling on a Hyundai Tucson to spread the word on the dangers of global warming.
Srinivasa said that after covering 600,000 km around the world since 1986, they understand that saving the earth was an urgent matter.

“If we don’t start playing our roles in preventing global warming, the earth will be a much hotter place 100 years from now,’’ added Srinivasa during aninterview at Menara Star last week.
Srinivasa, a father of two, said they normally met students at the places they stopped and gave talks on global warming and preserving the earth.
The students are also told to write to their governments on the subject in the hope that the message would reach all the industrialised countries like the G8, he added
Gnanasekaran added that if the G8 wanted to save the world, they should set up a fund to save forests because trees are the largest natural mechanism to remove carbon dioxide from the air.
“We will send a memorandum to the UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon at New York after we complete our tour of the Asian region,” he said.
Srinivasa and Gnanasekaran’s first world tour back in 1986 was from New Delhi across six continents on bicycles, championing world peace and nuclear disarmament. Their other missions included saving the planet, saving Antarctica, environmental protection and saving the rainforests.
“During one of our world tours, we almost lost our lives but we survived because we realised that we should never give up hope and must always think positively,” said Gnanasekaran.

New Delhi, April 17: Two environment enthusiasts from Pondicherry today embarked on a world tour to promote awareness about environmental protection and to spread the message of world peace and nuclear disarmament.
The two enthusiasts, Mr T. Srinivasa Rao and Mr R. Gnanasekaran, will undertake the world tour on a Maruti Gypsy King. The tour will conclude at the UN Headquarters in New York in December 2002.
The Minister of State for Finance, Mr Gingee N. Ramachandran, flagged them off in their Maruti Gypsy at a function here. Mr Jagdish Khattar, managing director,
Maruti Udyog Limited, was also present on the occasion.
Mr Rao and Mr Gnanasekaran have been using this route to spread the message of world peace and environment protection for the past 16 years. They have worked for these objectives as part of their campaign, ‘Mission Save Earth’.
The duo began their campaign in 1986 by travelling nearly 65,000 km across 38 countries on a bicycle. The second such endeavour was during 1990-93 when they covered 1.6 lakh km across 70 countries in a Maruti Gypsy.
This was followed by a tour covering 55,000 km during 1996-98 in a Maruti Zen. Finally, their fourth tour on a Maruti Gypsy concluded recently, during which they travelled 50,000 km.
Mr Rao and Mr Gnanasekaran are furthering their mission by interacting with a whole range of people, from world leaders and policy makers to students and youth organisations. During their earlier trips, they have met UN Secretaries General Javier Perez De Cueller, Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali and Mr Kofi Annan. They have also addressed thousands of students world-wide and motivated them to set up forums for environment protection.
“Environmental destruction in the past was small in scale with only a limited area of impact. With globalisation and spread of the consumer culture, the threat to the environment has increased manifold, thus increasing the role and importance of people-based initiatives like ours,” the duo said.

CHENNAI: Seeking to create awareness about the danger of global warming, two youths from Tamil Nadu on Sunday embarked on a year-long world expedition during which they propose to impress upon lawmakers of the United States the need to ratify the Kyoto protocol.
This is the seventh such expedition for the environmentalists -- T Srinivasa Rao and R Gnanasekaran--who have already travelled around the world six times for the cause of nuclear disarmament, environmental protection and preservation of rain forests.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi felicitated the duo at a function here and flagged off the expedition, sponsored by various PSUs and private companies.
The youth have planned to traverse 30 countries across five continents in a Hyundai Tucson SUV in 365 days.
They would first stop over at New York and cover most parts of the US and Latin America in the first leg, Rao told PTI.
The duo was scheduled to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and present a book on their travel experiences during their previous expedition.
Rao said they would create awareness about the danger of global warming, besides meeting US lawmakers to urge them to come to the UN fold on the Kyoto Protocol.
Although the US was a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, which had the objective of reducing Greenhouse gases that caused climate change, the Government had not ratified it yet.
"We are also planning to utilise the election fever prevailing in the US. We will try to meet Presidential hopefuls like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and get their support on the issue," he added.

"In fact the oil industry has contributed in the form of significant improvement in the quality of fuel supplied in the country so that auto emission is brought down to world standards. For example supply of low sulphur diesel (0.05% sulphur) and unleaded & low benzene (1%) petrol in four Metros is at par with most of the countries in the world including developed countries. Moreover unleaded petrol is being sold through out the country", Shri Naik said.
Mr T.Srinivasa Rao and Mr R.Gnanasekaran informed the Minister that the oil industry has been extending its full cooperation and support to them since 1990. They complemented Petroleum Minister for his concerns to improve and preserve environment. The young environmentalists further informed Shri Naik that their current tour which is 5th in the series of world tours focusses on 'Mission Save Earth' Campaign to bring the world together to save the world from the Global Warming. The present tour will cover 5 Continents and is expected to conclude by the year 2003.

This was followed by a tour covering 55,000 kilometres during 1996-98, with the message "Save Antarctica" completed successfully in a Maruti Zen. All these three world tours ended at UN Headquarters in New York with a meeting with the respective Secretaries General. The fourth tour on a Maruti Gypsy concluded recently in which they had travelled 50,000 kilometres .
